Abingdon is a market town and is situated 6 miles down stream from Oxford on the river Thames. Abingdon was formerly the county town of Berkshire up until 1974; however local government re-organisation designated it an Oxfordshire town thereafter.
The town is steeped in history and can boast to be one of the oldest town’s in Britain. Abingdon has a magnificent county hall and court house which was purportedly designed by Christopher Wren. It now stands in its own right as the town’s museum.
Abingdon’s doesn’t have any rail links as the railway station closed in 1963, fortunately there are frequent services from nearby Didcot and Oxford and there are excellent road links provided by the M4 and the M40 close by.
MG cars were synonymous with the town for over 50 years, however the decline of the manufacturing sector under the Thatcher Government meant that production ceased in 1980. The county’s proximity to London is reflected in extortionate house prices, but it is a popular base for commuters
